Wow, maybe we should start each play date by getting out the smashing basket...smash some stuff...then lay down the ground rules for our play date!

You know, I think this is my favorite post here so far because this little lesson has made the biggest improvement in my life! Before, I had taken it for granted, this innate destructive drive, but now that I acknowledge it out loud, it's automatic: Ford and Chas now have a mallet and a basket of things I've set aside for them to smash: acorns, bottle caps, old nuts, bubblewrap--oh my LORD, can they spend hours smashing this stuff up! It's a brilliant redirection! Thanks :)

Thanks for all the great feedback! I feel less alone putting this idea out there when I hear that other moms have the same bravery management dilemmas.

One tip for the younger ones... When Seth was younger he would stop playing, turn to me and say "mommy I need to damage something". That was my queue to rush him outside turn the hose on jet and let him spray his mud pit for 3 minutes. Alternatively we had a heavy plastic mallet in our dirt pile and he would smash clods for a few minutes. When he was done with his testosterone management he would head back into the house to resume his "task".

I think having an official place/task for venting testosterone is not only fair but really helpful for little boys.
